3 Easy Ways to Celebrate President’s Day

Whether you write it President’s Day or Presidents’ Day, celebrating our Founding Fathers has been a staple in the United States since 1879

But how do we actually celebrate it?

Honestly, there isn’t any one right answer. Some people don’t even have President’s Day off at all, so it doesn’t have quite as much tradition and culture baked in as other holidays.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate in our own way! President’s Day can be a great way to learn about some history, work on yourself, and rake in some seriously sweet deals - and we’re going to show you the best ways to do that!

What is President’s Day? When Did it Start?

President’s Day (which started out as President’s Day, then was changed informally to Presidents’ Day, then went back to President’s Day, which makes both versions correct?) got its start from the one that started it all - that’s right, you guessed it - George Washington. While it wasn’t his idea exactly, the US government made Washington’s birthday (February 22nd) a national holiday in 1879 to celebrate his leadership and success. However, Just like the ol’ US of A, this holiday has gone through quite a few changes.

In 1951, it was proposed that President’s Day shouldn’t just be about Washington, but president Abraham Lincoln, too. Lincoln’s birthday is February 12th, a mere 10 days before - thus changing the name from President’s Day (singular) to Presidents’ Day (plural)! It should be noted that this change wasn’t made official, though, so the US government still recognizes it as President’s Day. At this point, the right place for the apostrophe depends on who you ask.

But we’re not done yet. A couple decades later, the government (smartly) decided that we needed more long weekend holidays, and sought to make President’s Day a Monday-exclusive celebration. So, in 1971, President’s Day was changed again to change the holiday from being celebrated on February 22nd to being celebrated on the third Monday of every month

And we’re so grateful they did!

Now that we’ve gone over our history lesson, it’s time to learn how to celebrate this confusing holiday the right way!

The 3 Best Ways to Celebrate This President’s Day

Even if you’re working on this historical holiday, there are plenty of ways to celebrate. We’ve compiled a list of 3 different ways you can get into the presidential spirit:

  • Go on a President’s Day Deal Hunt
Every third Monday of February has become a day of relaxation for some, a day of patriotism for others, and a day of savings for all of us.
  • Every store in their right mind has a pretty killer sale on President’s Day (including us), and who are we to say no to deals? A penny saved is a penny earned, right? We think so.

That’s why a great way to celebrate this holiday is by scouting out the best deals, promotions, and sales that the internet has to offer. The most common sales on President’s Day are tech, apparel, furniture, and appliances - so if you’re in the market for any of those, President’s Day is the day to look!

  • Read Up on Some Historical Non-Fiction

Let’s start off with some Presidential Trivia!

    • Did you know that George Washington was an enthusiastic dog breeder?

    • Or that Richard Nixon was an incredible poker player?

    • How about that John Tyler had a whopping 15 children?

Interesting, right? Our presidents have led some pretty eccentric lives, despite appearing stoic and dignified in their portraits.

Biographies of presidents past (and present) are filled with surprisingly fascinating little tidbits and pieces of info. Why not find one online or at your local library and try it out?

Be warned, you may find that they aren’t quite who you think they are - most presidents are very different in their personal life than when they’re leading a nation (and more often than not they can get a bit problematic). But, if you’re all good with that, it's a great way to spend the day!

  • Practice Some Serious Self-Care
  • Whether you’re at home, at the office, or in your home-office, you can still use President’s Day to treat yourself.

Start your day off right with your favorite breakfast, a shower, and some yoga. We recommend our compression leg sleeves for stretching, as they protect your joints without inhibiting any movement).
