3 Easy Ways to Celebrate Presidentâs Day

Whether you write it Presidentâs Day or Presidentsâ Day, celebrating our Founding Fathers has been a staple in the United States since 1879.Â
But how do we actually celebrate it?Â
Honestly, there isnât any one right answer. Some people donât even have Presidentâs Day off at all, so it doesnât have quite as much tradition and culture baked in as other holidays.Â
However, that doesnât mean we canât celebrate in our own way! Presidentâs Day can be a great way to learn about some history, work on yourself, and rake in some seriously sweet deals - and weâre going to show you the best ways to do that!Â
What is Presidentâs Day? When Did it Start?
Presidentâs Day (which started out as Presidentâs Day, then was changed informally to Presidentsâ Day, then went back to Presidentâs Day, which makes both versions correct?) got its start from the one that started it all - thatâs right, you guessed it - George Washington. While it wasnât his idea exactly, the US government made Washingtonâs birthday (February 22nd) a national holiday in 1879 to celebrate his leadership and success. However, Just like the olâ US of A, this holiday has gone through quite a few changes.
In 1951, it was proposed that Presidentâs Day shouldnât just be about Washington, but president Abraham Lincoln, too. Lincolnâs birthday is February 12th, a mere 10 days before - thus changing the name from Presidentâs Day (singular) to Presidentsâ Day (plural)! It should be noted that this change wasnât made official, though, so the US government still recognizes it as Presidentâs Day. At this point, the right place for the apostrophe depends on who you ask.
But weâre not done yet. A couple decades later, the government (smartly) decided that we needed more long weekend holidays, and sought to make Presidentâs Day a Monday-exclusive celebration. So, in 1971, Presidentâs Day was changed again to change the holiday from being celebrated on February 22nd to being celebrated on the third Monday of every month.Â
And weâre so grateful they did!Â
Now that weâve gone over our history lesson, itâs time to learn how to celebrate this confusing holiday the right way!Â
